February 24, 2010

On February 19, everyone with an email address should have received an email containing important information about the reunion.  In addition to the location, we also requested a $50 deposit per person to go toward the final payment.  We want to be sure we meet the minimum dollar amount required by the Bolger Center.

Also, within the emailed letter is the link to a new survey, asking you for contact information and intentions for  attending the reunion. We need this information for planning and for knowing how to price the dinner/dance tickets.  If you did not receive the letter, so have not taken the online survey, please contact glorialevin@verizon.net   (or 301-320-5068) for instructions.  Even if you are unable to attend, we still need certain information from you so appreciate your cooperation.

Please save the dates for our 50th Reunion:

Dates:  October 15-17, 2010

Where:  The Bolger Center, Potomac, MD

January 12, 2010

An email has been sent to all classmates for whom we have found email addresses, introducing a survey to assist in planning for our 50th  reunion.  The deadline for receipt of survey responses is January 21, 2010.

Happy New Year.

Amazingly, 2010 marks the 50th anniversary of our graduation from Northwood. We want to organize a “special” reunion and thereby attract classmates who have missed all or many of the prior reunions.  But what constitutes a “special” reunion?  The last several reunions have consisted of a 2-3 day event, held at a beachfront motel at Ocean City in early October (the economical off-season) with an open hospitality room; a dinner/dance; free time to walk the boardwalk, golf or outlet shop; and a picnic hosted at a classmate’s home.  Most agree that we are ready for some changes in that model.  From multiple discussions, pro and con, three general options for a venue have emerged:  (1) repeating but upgrading the prior model, by using a nice hotel in Ocean City for most activities; OR (2) holding reunion events (hospitality suite, dinner/dance, etc.) in a hotel in Montgomery County and including a hosted visit to Northwood High School; OR (3) holding the main reunion in Montgomery County followed by an excursion to the Ocean City area.

We are surveying all classmates with known email addresses, using a questionnaire to gauge your interests and preferences. Decisions of the reunion planning committee will be made based on the survey results.  Even if you are not interested or are interested but unable to attend, we still need you to fill out the first few questions of the survey.  Two versions of the survey are available  -- a web based survey and an email attachment.  Please contact Gloria Levin (glorialevin@verizon.net or 301-320-5068) before January 21 to obtain the survey and instructions for filling it out.

Many thanks.

Dear Fellow Northwood Graduate:

Can you believe that almost 50 years ago, we were flying high as seniors of the Class of 1960?  A lot of water has gone under the bridge since those days and now we are high flying seniors of another sort and it is time to celebrate those intervening 50 years in style.

A small group of reunion committee members met recently to begin the planning process.  Because of the success of previous reunions held in Ocean City, the consensus is that the reunion should remain at that venue.  However, we do have a sub-committee searching for other possible locations in the Ocean City area to see what else might be out there. After all, this is a special reunion and we want it to be just right. Although we don’t have an exact date(s) as yet, we know the reunion will take place in October after the summer rates drop.

At this time, we are asking for your comments, suggestions, and feedback to help us with our plans.  We would also like to contact as many classmates as possible, so if you know someone who might not be on our list or has changed their email/address, please let us know.  You can check our website at www.northwoodhighschool.com to see a list of classmates, found, missing, and, sadly, deceased.

In the meantime, any comments or suggestions can be sent to Phyllis (Proctor) Parker at phylbaby1@aol.com.  We look forward to hearing from you in the near future. Be sure to check the website and your email for further information as it becomes available.

We look forward to seeing you at our 50th!

Hi Phyllis, If we do two reunions that will involve some extra book keeping.  The local reunion records would have to be kept separate from the records for O.C. The local reunion might just involve a diner some where in the DC or Balt. area and might involve a lower cost. The reunion in O.C. might cost more with extra funds for a hospitality suite, and of course, rooms at the motel extra.  We would have to order double everything, if it came down to 50% for O.C., 50% for local.  "Survey Monkey" I am sure would add an extra cost unless it is a free service.  Just some of the problems doing two reunions.  How about getting some out side our group to run the local reunion.  We will have to discuss this further.

Personally, I don't think bringing in outsiders to do what, in the past, we've done better ourselves, would be a good idea. Wherever we decide to hold this event, we would be better capable of having the type of event that historically has brought in people from other classes to attend our event rather than go to the "sleeper" that their own class held, often with "professional" help.

This is truly something that I wanted to avoid.  I don't see the usefulness of TWO complete reunions, plus I think that the numbers would be down because people might feel the need to make a choice.  It is confusing to those coming.  I really want to work with these folks and I am all in favor of doing the survey in light of the responses I have received. I'm getting ready to leave the house for the day so I will give this some thought.  What I might do is call Gloria and talk to her in person.  As great as email is, some things are better discussed face to face (so to speak).  More than that, I would like to have the committee's support for a survey and also for us being more inclusive and inviting these folks to join us.  What say you to this idea?
